Spiritual Health
Some call it quiet time, others daily devotions, or mediation. It really doesn’t matter what label you put on it, time spent directly communing with God through prayer and Bible reading is what it’s all about. It’s a time to seek Him, confess your sin and seek His forgiveness. It’s also a time to learn from His Word and grow in your understanding of who God is and what He wants to do in your life. It’s an opportunity to daily renew your commitment to Him and to seek His guidance. These moments will enlighten, encourage, equip and empower you like nothing else can, but the goal is not to know more about God, it’s to actually know God Himself. The key to a joyful and meaningful spiritual life is having that close relationship with God. First you must know Him as your Savior. Then daily seek to draw close to Him. As surely as nutritious food helps the body, so a daily quiet time with the Savior feeds and nourishes the soul. It’s impossible to growth significantly without it. But your daily quiet time is not just for you! John 4:23 reminds us that the Lord Himself desires your fellowship and delights in your worship. He longs for that one on one time with His child just as any parent would. Why not determine right now, if you haven’t already, that you will make having this special time with the Lord a daily priority? Here’s how you can get started . . .
Set a time that works for you. It may mean getting up a few minutes earlier in the morning, or staying up a few minutes later at night, but try to find 15 to 20 minutes of time that you will set apart to spend with God. Don’t put anything else in that time slot. You may need to set an alarm to remind you that it’s time to pull away from other things and meet with your Heavenly Father. Select a place where you can be alone and uninterrupted. Choose a spot that is quiet and as free from distractions as possible. Keep your Bible study materials and prayer journal in that area so you’ll have them ready for your special time. ©Copyright, Ann Shorb, Christian Counseling & Educational Services | |

The answer is Not necessarily! While harboring sin or sinful attitudes in your life can certainly produce depression, other pos sible causes include experiencing a significant loss or having a physical problem that causes body chemistry to be imbalanced. Great men in the Bible, such as David (in many of his Psalms), Elijah (I Kings 19), Moses (Exodus 18), and Jonah (Jonah 4) experienced depression. In each of these situations God sent someone to help the suffering individual but He did not condemn him. Psalm 23:18 says, The Lord is close to the broken hearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Whatever the cause, God cares about the person experiencing depression. Some Interesting Facts: - One in four women and one in ten men will develop depression some time in their life. - Men experience depression differently than women. So what can you do to help? Let him be honest about his feelings. Allow him to talk about his negative, depressed feelings. Don't say, You shouldn't feel like that. Be there for him. A depressed person may have lost someone important in his life. Let him know you care and will be there for him. Be aware. A depressed person often tries to avoid dealing with his feelings, or to pretend he is fine. If he fails to get help, he will only become more depressed. Help him get help. Avoid saying . . . -Just trust God. -Just get over it. -If you would just do . . . -You have lots going for you. -You shouldn't feel so bad. When to Seek Help Major depression is a serious illness and can be fatal if left untreated. A person cannot face this illness alone. Seek professional help for yourself, or for someone you care for when you see . . . - Three or more symptoms of depression - Response to your attempts to help - No family or friends there for support - There are suicidal thoughts - The person turning to substance abuse - The individual cannot take care of his family or himself. © Copyright Christian Counseling & Educational Services - www.ccesonline.com

Exercise to Enlightenment How to Transform the Every Day Ordinary into the Every Day Extraordinary By: Natalie Forrest You can easily transform what you do every day into a way to feel more happy and full. You don’t have to do anything differently other than shift your focus. The eyes take in about 400,000 pieces of information per second; we have the ability to consciously process about 2,000 of that, so there is literally a whole other world waiting to be explored right before your eyes. So if you want more in your life, change your focus.
Here are some easy tips for turning your everyday (or not quite every day) walk or jog into an insightful experience that will add to your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.
•Stay focused on your body’s feelings. So as your foot hits the ground, feel all the associated movements of the muscles in the body. Feel the hardness of the ground, the softness of your shoe, notice how your arms swing in a rhythm. Every one of these sensations will give you insight into how you are feeling. When you become aware of how you are feeling, then you have the power to change how you are feeling. This helps with prevention of injuries, taking care of injuries, noticing and stopping negative thoughts and feelings -- not to mention how great it is for releasing stress.
•Breathe. Full RELAXED breaths. This innate intelligence also holds the key to health. Various studies have linked shallow breathing with increased blood pressure, heart attacks and some even indicate that there might be a link between improper breathing and cancer (studies are not conclusive yet). Not only does breathing help keep you alive and healthy, it also offers you the ability to be and feel connected to something much bigger than yourself: the whole world. When you inhale, you breathe in oxygen, and your exhale is mostly carbon dioxide. Trees and plants (and the ocean) ‘breathe in’ your exhale and ‘breathe out’ oxygen, which you inhale. So by focusing on your breath, you can feel into a system that connects you with the whole world. The essential thing to remember is that this is going whether you pay attention or not. But the rewards of paying attention are huge. ALSO, your exhale contains approximately 16% oxygen (this is why CPR works), that can and does get inhaled by other humans, birds, squirrels, dogs. Effortlessly connecting you whether you like it or not with everything within your presence, and beyond. You can also look at it like this: the birds, squirrels, dogs are supporting your existence by exhaling. Pretty nice of them.
•Relax a little, while you are walking, or jogging, or sitting. Relax your hips as you are walking, let your belly be soft so you can breathe fully, let your neck be relaxed and upright, relax your jaw, eyes, hands. There is always something that can be relaxed. If you are stressed, your body can’t tell the difference between whether there is real danger (like a saber tooth tiger going to eat you) or you are choosing to worry about your job. Both of these scenarios have the same stress responses in the body: increased cortisol, increased hearing (which can cause normal things to be agitating like a car horn honking), shutting down of digestion and sexual desires. Not to mention how horrible all this feels in the body.
•Try a little Gratitude on for size. As you walk and breathe and feel your body being relaxed, focus on something that you love and are thankful for. Ex: The presence of trees on this earth so that you don’t die of co2 poisoning. Or your job, or your family. It doesn’t matter what you are thankful for, as long as you feel gratitude. The results of a Gratitude and Thanksgiving study (by McCollough and Emmons) indicated that “daily gratitude exercises resulted in higher reported levels of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, optimism and energy. Additionally, the gratitude group experienced less depression and stress, was more likely to help others, exercised more regularly and made more progress toward personal goals. According to the findings, people who feel grateful are also more likely to feel loved.”
The ability to improve your life and increase your happiness is literally right at your fingertips. Any of us can easily transform our daily ordinary activities into a way to feel more love, gain insight and be connected. It’s as easy as 1,2,3: Feel, Relax, Breathe. Repeat.

Total Gym Workouts By: Robert Thomson
Total gym workouts are the key to developing and sustaining a healthy and strong body. There is a trend for bodybuilders just to concentrate on one limited area, and miss out on the holistic benefits of full body training. Here, we show you the benefits of a total gym workout.
Phase 1 When you start a total gym workout, you should start by doing cardio work. Warming up is essential for any athletic endeavor, and with bodybuilding, you want to get the limbs loose and the blood pumping. Warming up will also help burn off excess fat. Running is a very common way of warming up, but for something really strenuous try the boxer's training of skipping.
Phase 2 People often start total gym workouts by working the arms or legs, but this really makes little sense. It makes a lot more sense to end your workout with your limbs, as tiring them early will mean that your arms will only be able to handle reduced weights during the rest of your workout, and your legs will not be able to carry you as vigorously around the gym. Working the chest and back first is a much better progression. Try to use dumbbell bench presses to enhance your chest, and if you have a pec deck, use that. It is not so easy to work your back, but you can do lat pull downs and deadlifts if you have access to the right equipment, and these should produce very satisfactory results.
Phase 3 The arms can come next, and this is a favorite area of so many bodybuilders. You can look forward to this part of your total gym workout, as your arms can produce the most visible results from your hard work. Too many people don't consider that there are 3 sets of muscles in the arm, so you need to exercise them all in turn. You can try some dumbbell curls which benefit the biceps, some triceps pulldowns which will build the triceps (hard work!), and then forearms curls and reverse forearm curls to enhance your forearm muscles. If you work this hard, you will see for yourself why this is not a good place to start!
Phase 4 Time now for some leg work. Even with total gym workouts, many people overlook the legs, unless they are competitive bodybuilders. As the legs do a lot of work carrying the rest of your body, they respond well to exercise. Start out by doing squats to build your thighs, and if you try single footed heel raises for your calves you should find them highly effective. The hamstrings are the final part, and although they will be exercised by default during your running and warming up, you can also do some basic leg curls which will increase the effect.
This will show you that total workouts can be simple enough, and not take that much time, and also that working the whole body is far more effective.
Exciting Salads Tips and Ideas By: Spencer Hunt Getting the right vitamin, minerals and glyconutrients can really help your health, but you also need to eat a healthy diet. Adding salads can be a fun and easy way to do this.
Salads don't have to be the boring iceberg lettuce ho hum concoction. Add a little panache, a little spice, a little flair. Be creative; don't be afraid to try different things. Add some chopped or sliced nuts! Pick up a salad book and see all the possibilities. There are numerous books out there that will tell you how to make creative salads that are filling, satisfying, fun and might even help you lose weight. You can pretty much just look through your pantry and fridge, grab whatever catches your eye and throw it all together!
Greens Don't limit yourself to iceberg lettuce. There are so many other exciting and delicious greens out there! Baby spinach, heart of Romaine and dandelion leaves all make great greens for your salad. You can even throw several different types of greens together to make an awesome salad. Check your local farmer's market or the produce section of your local grocery store and browse the selections available.
Veggies Vegetables are great in salads. Throw in some raw squash, zucchini, onion, garlic, bell pepper and carrots and you will have an awesome salad. You can also roast the vegetables with some seasoning and toss them in with some greens or pasta. Jicama is also a great addition to a salad. Similar to a turnip, a jicama is large, crisp and sweet. Cube it or slice it and add it to your salad for a healthy, low fat, crunchy kick!
Pasta Pasta can turn a salad into a meal. Fettuccini, spaghetti, angel hair pasta, rotini and other pastas are all wonderful for pasta salads. The great thing about pasta salad is that it can be served hot or cold. You can toss it with some vegetables, meats, cheese and whatever else strikes your fancy. Sauté your vegetables in a little olive oil and add some basil and sea salt. Once your vegetables are tender, toss them with the pasta. The olive oil sticks to the pasta (don't rinse the pasta in cold water, warm pasta holds the oil and seasonings better) and blends all the flavors. You can also cook your pasta and roast your vegetables then mix well.
Protein Meat is often added to salads. While bacon bits are probably the most popular, it isn't necessarily the healthiest. Try poached, chopped chicken or fish to your salads. You can also drain and rinse a can of tuna and add that to your salad with a little lemon pepper and vinegar. Shrimp and crab also pack a nice punch of protein to your salads. Ham is also good, but it can be high in sodium. Season your chicken or fish well and toss it with your greens and vegetables.
Dressings Regular bottle dressings are OK, but there is a whole world out there of vinegars and concoctions that you can make yourself. Try drizzling a little raspberry balsamic vinegar over raw, chopped vegetables. Some apple cider vinegar, mixed with a little cold-pressed olive oil, garlic and the seasonings of your choice can make an awesome dressing. Think about the flavors that you like, the spices that you enjoy. Do you like basil? It makes a great dressing if you use some olive oil and rice wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar. For an added kick, splash in some white wine or red wine. Just play with it and see what flavors turn you on!
Eating enough greens in your diet can really boost your immune system and overall energy, as well as help you to maintain a healthy body shape.
